OKEECHOBEE — October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month in Okeechobee County.
At their Oct. 20 meeting, the Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners presented a proclamtion to representatives of Martha’s House, a shelter for victims of domestic violence.
Martha’s House is a full service domestic violence shelter for survivors and their children and is dedicated toward working to end domestic violence and to serve survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. They operate a 24-bed emergency shelter and a 24-hour hotline, provide outreach services, violence prevention education, court hearing accompaniment and injunction assistance and victims’ compensation.
In the past year, Martha’s House provided services to more than 290 survivors of domestic violence and their children.
On Saturday, Martha's House will host "A Walk In Her Shoes," from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Flagler Park. It takes about 45 minutes to walk through the simulation to learn what happens to victims of domestic violence.
