Off duty detective involved in accidental shooting

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — On the evening of Wednesday, Oct 12 law enforcement responded to an accidental shooting within the city limits of Okeechobee County involving an off-duty Okeechobee City Police Detective.

The detective was having a get-together with friends at their residence. At some point, the detective showed two friends his/her gun collection in a separate room away from the get-together.

One of the friends picked up one of the handguns, believing the gun was unloaded, and pulled the trigger, firing a single round into and through his/her hand.

As the detective was providing first aid to the friend's gunshot wound,  the detective realized he/she also had been struck in the hip by the same single round fired.

Both gunshot victims were transported to Raulerson Hospital, where they are in stable condition and expected to recover fully.

We will remain transparent during this investigation and release the results once the case is complete. Initial findings are that this was unintentional, and evidence and witness statements look towards the shooting as accidental.
