OHS girls basketball senior night upcoming

OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee High School girls varsity basketball team will hold their senior night during their first home game of the season this year, on Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m.

With the potential for COVID-19 to delay or even cancel games this season, head coach Jovanny Torres wanted to make sure the team had the chance to honor their seniors. The Lady Brahmans are scheduled to host Sebring on that date.

Making the varsity team this year are Leta Adamo, Adryauna Baker, Hannah Beard, Caylie Huff, Haylie Huff, Semaj Jasper, Callie Phillips, Jasmine Shanks, Justice Shanks, Morgan Tucker and Sanye Washington.

After that home game against Sebring, the Lady Brahmans will be on the road for two games to face South Fork and Treasure Coast, respectively, on Nov. 20 and Dec. 1.

Then they’ll be home for two back-to-back games with the first taking place on Dec. 3 against Vero Beach and the second Port St. Lucie on Dec. 7.

The Lady Brahmans went an impressive 20-7 last year, advancing all the way to the district championship. In that district championship game, Okeechobee lost to Port St. Lucie by three points, 57-54.

Then sophomore Adryauna Baker nearly tied the game as the final buzzer sounded. Baker picked off a Port St. Lucie pass with less that two seconds remaining, quickly turned around and put up a three-pointer that only just missed.

Baker was the second leading scorer on the team last year, behind 2020 senior Alkeecia Clayton. Replacing Clayton’s production on the court will be one of the major tasks facing the Lady Brahmans this year as they attempt to re-create the success from last year.

Sophomore Semaj Jasper came in as a freshman and led the team in rebounds with 185, and was second in assists with 51.

With how close they came to winning the district championship last year, you’d have to imagine the Lady Brahmans are mentally preparing to make another run this year. With so many returning players on the squad, it’s very possible the girls could bring in a district championship to match the one the Okeechobee boys have won for the past two years.

The Lady Brahmans start their climb back into fighting for a district title at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 19 against Sebring.
