OHS student charged with disrupting an educational institution

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — An Okeechobee High School student was arrested April 1 at approximately 1 p.m. after reportedly disrupting a school event. Aiyana Cokley, 16, was charged with disruption of an educational institution, resisting arrest without violence and battery on a law enforcement officer.

School Resource Officer Donnie Holmes was approached by Assistant Principal Christine Norman and told Aiyana refused to leave the gymnasium and was trying to fight another girl. According to the report, Aiyana was yelling and cursing at the teachers, who were trying to get her to leave the gym. Holmes told the girl if she did not start walking to the office, he would arrest her, but she continued to curse and refused to move. The gym was cleared of students in an effort to remove Aiyana’s audience in hopes she would be more compliant without them. Aiyana continued to refuse to leave.

Finally, Holmes took the girl’s arm and told her she was under arrest. A struggle ensued and the deputy and the girl ended up on the floor as he struggled to get hand restraints on her. Aiyana was able to get away from Holmes and ran for the exit. Holmes was able to catch her near the exit and they both fell out the door onto the concrete. She reportedly rolled onto her back and kicked Holmes in the leg.

Due to the uproar, the school was placed on a temporary yellow lockdown until the girl could be restrained and removed. Two deputies arrived to help and she was finally restrained and escorted to the patrol car. Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to the high school to check her out, and she was taken to Raulerson Hospital for further evaluation.

After being cleared at the hospital, Aiyana was booked and then transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Fort Pierce.
