OHS swim team takes on Somerset

OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee High School boys and girls swim teams defeated Somerset College Prep on Sept. 17.

The OHS girls finished with a score 82 to Somerset’s 74, while the boys finished with a score 92 to Somerset’s 62.

“Everything went really well considering all the restrictions that are in place,” said OHS swim coach Jack Boon. “The parents were very cooperative. We took down the wind shade around the pool so the parents could still watch even though they couldn’t physically be on the deck. We had a late start this season, but the team is doing well. We’re a really young team. Almost 50% of the swimmers are freshmen.”

In the girls 200 medley relay Somerset finished first with a time of 2:21.50, followed by the Okeechobee team consisting of Yamila Lopez, Gracie Gamiotea, Vanessa Johnson and Jolene Sutton, who finished with a time of 2:31.43, and finally the Okeechobee team Kimberlee Marquis, Emily Hilderbrand, Rachel Hogenkamp, and Lilly Maxwell, with a time of 2:40.00.

In the 200 freestyle, Zoe Walther finished second with 3:03.41, while Rylie Tucker finished third with 3:04.47. In the 200 individual medley, Jolene Sutton finished second with 2:52.25, and Rachel Hogenkamp third with 3:08.00.

In the 100 butterfly, Vanessa Johnson finished second with 1:27.75, and Cherylynn Bohannan third with 2:02.00. At the 100 freestyle, Gracie Gamiotea placed first with a time of 1:08.00, followed closely in second by Jolene Sutton at 1:09.18,.

On the other side, in the boys 200 medley relay, the Okeechobee team consisting of Kase Myers, Ty Easterday, Gabriel Bowen, and Tucker Myers finished just ahead of the Somerset squad with a time of 2:07.10 to 2:08.22.

In the 200 freestyle, Okeechobee’s Dylan DaSilva finished first at 2:22.00. Tucker Myers finished third with 2:42.31. In the 200 individual medley, Joshua Boon finished second with 2:53.18, followed by Ryan Conrad in third with 3:34.00.

At the 50 freestyle, Kase Myers finished first with24.59, and Brecken Weliver-Hoover third with 28.00. In the 100 butterfly: Dylan DaSilva placed first with a time of 1:10.00, followed by Surfiel Santiago at 1:10.60, and Gabriel Bowen at 1:10.85.

Tucker Myers placed first in the 100 freestyle with a time of 1:08.00, followed by Brecken Weliver-Hoover at 1:15.83.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the Okeechobee team of Tucker Myers, Joshua Boon, Dylan DaSilva, and Brecken Weliver-Hoover finished first at 1:55.72, with Gabriel Bowen, Aiden Scalf, Ryan Conrad, and Ty Easterday coming in third at 2:19.00.

“Between my veterans and my freshman we have a really strong team this year,” explained Boon. “Some are showing great promise.”

The Brahman swimmers are scheduled to host another meet this week against Centennial High School on Sept. 24.
