Okeechobee County Commission to hear from FDOT about plans for SR 70 East

OKEECHOBEE – Representatives from Florida Department of Transportation are scheduled to make a presentation about work planned on State Road 70 East at the Thursday, April 8 meeting of the Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners.

FDOT’s L.K. Nadem and Michael Johnson will review the SR 70 East resurfacing and lane realignment project.

The meeting starts at 9 a.m. in the Historic Okeechobee County Courthouse, 304 N.W. Second Street. The FDOT presentation is scheduled at 10 a.m. The meeting can be viewed online at https://www.co.okeechobee.fl.us/

When the SR 70 East project was discussed at a previous commission meeting, commissioners expressed concerns about plans to use medians to block some left turns.

At 11:15 a.m., commissioners will convene in executive session with the Local International Association of Firefighters.

Other items on the agenda for the April 8 meeting include:

• A request to proclaim April as Water Conservation Month;

• A request to proclaim April as Child Abuse Prevention month;

• A request to designate April as National Government Month;

• A request from the Rotary Club to waive the fee for use of the Scott Driver Recreation Area for a fundraiser on May 8;

• Update on the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccinations;

• Consideration of a resolution in support of funding for revitalizing rural communities, including programs funded by the multi-use corridors of regional economic significance program;

• Update from Tourist Development Council;

• A request to use $51,626.91 from the E911 grant for the Okeechobee County Safety Answering Point;

• A request to approve $4,500 for the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s participation 2021 Florida Office of the Attorney General National Conference on Preventing Crime and Okeechobee County Class of 2021 Grad Night, with the funds to be transferred from the Crime Prevention Trust Fund;

• Appointment of one member to the Health Council of Southeast Florida;

• Appointment of one alternate member to the Okeechobee Utility Authority;

• Reassignment of positions on local and regional boards that were previously filled by Commissioner Bryant Culpepper, who resigned in March.
