Okeechobee County Commissioners make appointments to citizen board

Posted

OKEECHOBEE – Okeechobee County Commissioners appointed some new members to county boards on Thursday; some boards still have vacancies.

Jeff Jones, chairman of the Agri-Civic Center Committee asked the board to expand the number of people on the committee. He said they don’t want to turn away people who want to volunteer to be part of the group.

Three citizen applications were received for the vacancies on the Agri-Civic Center Advisory Committee. Two of the applicants – Jones and Joe Papasso – were current members applying to stay on the committee.

Jones, Papasso and new member Adam Cohen were appointed to the board for four year terms.

County Attorney Wade Vose said with an even number of people on the board, in case of a tie vote, the motion fails.

“For the four years we’ve been on boards, one of the hardest things we’ve had to do is get people to serve on boards,” said Commissioner Brad Goodbread.
“Anything we can do to get more people involved in self government, I am happy to do,” he said.

For the Construction Licensing Board, two incumbents Osiel Luviano and David Nunez were reappointed. Their terms will expire on March 1, 2024. An alternate position of the board is also open, but there were no other applicants.

Judith Mix was reappointed to the Library Advisory Board. Her term will expire March 1, 2025.
Joey Hoover and Samantha Saucedo were reappointed to the Planning Board/Board of Adjustments. There were no other applicants.

The Okeechobee Utility Authority had openings for one regular member and one alternate member. Tabitha Trent was appointed as a regular member. Her term will expire March 1, 2025. There is still an opening for an alternate member.
