OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners has declared October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
“This is not just a woman’s disease,” said Commissioner Kelly Owens, who presented the proclamation. “It’s important that men pay just as close attention to this as women.”
The proclamation notes breast cancer claims the lives of almost 40,000 U.S. women a year.
“Early detection is very important,” said Kantrel Smith, who accepted the proclamation. She said she is a breast cancer patient and also recently started Blessed Hands Outreach Services, a nonprofit organization to help women who have breast cancer. She said on Oct. 10 a mobile mammogram unit will be in Okeechobee from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 424 N.E. 15th Ave. For more information online, go to www.floridamobilemammography.com.
