Okeechobee Fire Report

• Okeechobee City Fire Department responded to 21 medical/EMS, one fire related, three motor vehicle accidents, one false alarm and one canceled call between Nov. 30 and Dec. 6.

• Okeechobee county Fire Rescue responded to 124 medical/EMS, seven motor vehicle accidents, four smoke/fire related, eight aircraft standby, seven dispatch and cancel and six miscellaneous calls last week. Out of 103 possible transports, seven were refused.

• On Dec. 4 at approximately 1:45 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire in the 13300 block of Northwest 160th Street. When they arrived, they found approximately 30 acres burning with a barn, a shed and a tractor in the center of the burn area. They were able to extinguish the fire without losing any of the structures. Once the Forest Service arrived, OCFR was released.

• On Dec. 4 at approximately 3:45 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire in the 15000 block of Northwest 260th Street. When they arrived, they monitored the scene until the Dept. of Forest Services arrived and put a plow line around the fire. At that time, all units were cleared to return to quarters.

• On Dec. 7 at approximately 5:30 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding unauthorized burning on U.S. 441 Southeast. When they arrived, they found several piles approximately 20x40 and 12’ high burning in a psture with no one around. They were called to another fire and asked Florida Forest Service to respond and extinguish the fires.

• On Dec. 7 at approximately 5:30 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding an electrical problem in the 6500 block of U.S. 441 Southeast. When they arrived, they were told the residents saw no flames or smoke, just the smell of burning when the power was turned on. The crew detected no smell, used the thermal imager and checked the panel box but found no sign of a problem. However, when they turned the power on, they heard arcing noises and turned the power back off and had FPL remove the meter. The homeowners were told to have an electrician come repair the equipment before power could be turned back on. Red Cross was called because the family had nowhere to go.
