Okeechobee Fire Report

• Okeechobee City Fire Department responded to 11 medical/EMS, three motor vehicle, two false alarms and five canceled calls between March 8 and March 14.
• Okeechobee County Fire Rescue responded to 116 medical/EMS, 16 motor vehicle accidents, two aircraft standbys, eight fire related, eight canceled and three miscellaneous calls last week. Of 100 possible transports, 12 were refused.
• On March 11, OCFR responded to a call at approximately 8:15 p.m. regarding a rubbish fire in the 8600 block of U.S. 441 North. When they arrived, the fire was already out. The owner was advised to have smaller fires in the future.

• On March 12 at approximately 3 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire on State Road 70 West. The fire was started by a tractor as it mowed. When they arrived, they made access to the slow moving fire and began extinguishing it. As they made it to the rear of the fire, they were no longer able to access it due to mud under the grass. A second engine attacked a small spot fire to the south. Once the forest service arrived, OCFR was cleared of the scene.
• On March 12 at approximately 9 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a brush fire behind the prison. When they arrived, they saw a column of smoke coming from a field. They had to cut the link of a chain in order to get through a gate blocking access to the field. They found a tractor trailer on fire in the middle of the field. The fire was extinguished, and the state fire marshal was called to the scene.
• On March 13 at approximately 8 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding unauthorized burning in the 3600 block of Northwest 15th Avenue. When they arrived, they found a large pile buring in a backyard. The owner said he had the fire under control. The crew found the fire bigger than was permitted and the owner had been fined in the past for similar reasons. The forest service advised them to explain the burn laws to the property owner and said they would be out in the morning to look at the fire.
• On March 14 at approximately 6:30 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a grass fire on 272nd Street. When they arrived, they found a small fire ignited by a lawn mower. The fire was extinguished.
• On March 14 at approximately 11:45 a.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a grass fire in the 16100 block of Northwest 220th Street. When they arrived, they found a power line had fallen and ignited a small fire. It had already been extinguished when they arrived. Glades County and the forest service were already on the scene.
• On March 14 at approximately 2:15 p.m., OCFR responded to a call regarding a cooking fire in the 1800 block of Northwest Third Lane. When they arrived, they found a cooking fire in the kitchen localized to the stove. The cause was determined to be unintentional.
