Okeechobee girls basketball takes on Westwood

OKEECHOBEE– The 10-2 Okeechobee High School Lady Brahman varity basketball team is closing out the regular season on the road in Fort Pierce.

The Lady Brahmans are traveling to take on the 9-9 Westwood Lady Panthers on Jan. 27.

Okeechobee has had a remarkable 2020-21 season, including going undefeated through their first nine games. They opened the year with a dramatic overtime victory against Sebring, and haven’t looked back.

Okeechobee’s most lopsided win, by far, was their 48-6 drubbing of Port St Lucie on Dec. 7. Their 61-16 win over Fort Pierce Central is a close second.

The Okeechobee defense had 20 steals against Port St. Lucie, and never allowed more than two points in a quarter. You couldn’t ask for more of a complete game.

In the second half of the season the Lady Brahmans faced the toughest opponents. One of those tough opponents were the Martin County Lady Tigers who were coming into the game with a 6-3 record.

The Lady Brahmans battled Martin County in a close, defensive match on Jan. 11 in Okeechobee, eventually coming out on top 36-29.

Junior Jasmine Shanks led Okeechobee in scoring with 20 points, more than half of the Lady Brahmans’ total offensive output for the game. Junior Adryauna Baker led the Lady Brahmans in steals with five and total rebounds with 8.

Okeechobee is tied for the best record in their 5A District 13 with Jensen Beach, who are also 10-2. Jensen faces a tough Centennial team in their final game of the season. If they lose that match it could help Okeechobee in the standings.
Before worrying about Jensen, though, the Lady Brahmans have to take care of their own court first and defeat the Westwood Lady Panthers on Jan. 27 at 7 p.m.
