Posted

OKEECHOBEE — A 35-year-old Okeechobee man has been charged with sexual battery on a 12-year-old child. Cody Dale Cooper was arrested Feb. 11 after a woman went to the state attorney’s office with an accusation of multiple occurrences of sexual battery which she said took place between 2005 and 2009.

Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Misei Esquivel was dispatched to the home of the complainant on Feb. 4. According to Esquivel’s report, the complainant was 12 years old when the abuse began, and it continued until she was 16. At the time the abuse began, Cooper was approximately 19.

The complainant said she was afraid to tell anyone what was happening at the time, and once, Cooper punched her in the stomach because he feared she might be pregnant.

The following charges were found to be over the statute of limitations:  two counts sexual battery, six counts lewd and lascivious molestation and one count sexual battery-forced. He was charged with sexual battery with a weapon, and his bond was set at $250,000.

The report notes Cooper is currently incarcerated in the Okeechobee County Jail on lewd and lascivious battery charges unrelated to this case. He was arrested in July of 2019 and charged with four counts sexual battery on a victim between the ages of 12 and 17.
