OKEECHOBEE — An Okeechobee man called 911 to report himself lost and was later charged with armed trespass.

According to Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Cauley’s report, Cauley was dispatched to the property of the Williamson Cattle Company after a 911 call from Kristopher Gunter, 34. Gunter told dispatch he was lost on U.S. 98 North and had been for the last three hours. When dispatch pinged his phone, it showed him on Northeast 39th Boulevard. As Cauley approached the gate at the entrance of the property, he noticed the gate was partially open and there was a vehicle light assembly laying on the ground next to the gate.

Cauley noted there are “no trespassing” signs on the gate.

At approximately 12:15 a.m., Cauley located Gunter about a mile from the main gate. His truck was stuck in the mud about 10 feet from the paved roadway. When Cauley made contact with Gunter, he noticed a strong smell of alcohol, and Gunter immediately became irate and aggressive, insisting Cauley and Deputy William Jolly pull him out of the mud. When told the deputies could not pull him out but would call for a tow truck, Gunter demanded to speak with a supervisor.

Cauley spoke with the owner of the property, who said he wanted to press charges for trespassing. He also said it would cost about $2,000 to repair the gate because the automatic opener was damaged as well.

A search of Gunter’s truck revealed a black handgunon the passenger side front seat. "There was also a magazine in the passenger seat," the report continues. "It was unloaded."

Gunter was held for eight hours in the county jail due to his intoxication. He was then released on a $2,500 bond.
