OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee County School District has announced that all public schools in the county will remain closed from Sept. 28 through Sept. 30.

Administrators announced the extension of school closings after a updated forecast for Hurricane Ian showed the storm shifting to the east towards Okeechobee County. Originally the school district had announced that schools would be closed on Sept. 28, and officials would assess the damage afterwards to determine if they could open again later in the week.

But the district says with the storm not departing the area until 11 p.m. on Thursday night, they won’t have time to check for damage or assess if roads are safe for student and employee travel
