Okeechobee T-ball squad finishes second in district

OKEECHOBEE- The Okeechobee T-Ball American All-Stars finished in second in their district tournament on the weekend of June 12 and June 13.

With only eight days to prepare before the tournament, the kids rallied and put together an impressive performance.

“The kids did an amazing job,” said coach J.R. Suarez. “With the weather it ended up being only about six days of practice. Not one day did they not want to do something we asked them to do in practice. One hundred percent effort every single day. Could not be more proud of them.”

Suarez also gave credit to his fellow coaches for helping get the kids ready ahead of the tournament, including Bobby Koedam, Sual Tijerina, Johnny Jones, and Preston Arnold along with team mom Melanie Flaherty.

A big rival at the tournament for the Okeechobee American squad was the team from Avon Park, who would eventually go on to win the tournament. Okeechobee played the more experienced Avon Park team on their first night of the tournament, falling short after a big back and forth battle.

The Okeechobee American team turned around and defeated the Okeechobee National team the next day before defeating the team from Sebring in a nail-biter. That set the kids up in a rematch against their rival Avon Park. In that game Okeechobee again fought hard, but fell short by only one run.

“With everything going against them the kids came out an absolutely thrilled everybody, explained Suarez. “The kids really impressed everybody on the coaching staff. The parents were great as well. It was really something to see with everyone being on the same page.”
