OKEECHOBEE — On Sunday, Dec. 11, 2022, at 1 a.m. a traffic crash occurred within Okeechobee County at SE 5th Street and Southwest 16th Avenue. The traffic crash consisted of a pickup truck running over a female pedestrian. This resulted in the pedestrian sustaining multiple broken bones/injuries. Ultimately, the victim passed due to her injuries.
As a result of the 911 call, which provided a vehicle description and a direction of travel, deputies were able to intercept the vehicle and apprehend the suspect driver, Cameron Runyon in the area of the former Boys School at 7200 Hwy 441. The driver was charged with fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of a traffic crash and driving under the influence. The suspect was arrested and transported to the Okeechobee County Jail, where he later posted bond.
On Thursday, Dec. 29, 2022, after further investigation, an arrest warrant was issued for the suspect driver. Deputy Gauroniak, along with deputies from the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office, members of the Criminal Investigations Division and the Okeechobee City Police Traffic Unit arrested suspect Cameron Runyon on the following arrest warrant charges: Vehicular Manslaughter with a bond set at $100,000, Fleeing with disregard of safety of others with a bond set at $25,000, and DUI Causing Death and failure to render aid with a bond set at $250,000.
Runyon was arrested and transported to the Okeechobee County Jail without any incident or resistance.
