BASINGER — Everyone is invited to a Picnic & Family Fun Day at the historic Pearce Homestead at Fort Basinger, Saturday, Oct. 1 from 10 a.m. -3 p.m. This is a special event by the Heritage Association of Highlands County with activities for the whole family. No admission or parking fees.
Bring a picnic lunch, blanket and lawn chairs and spend the day. Food will also be available for purchase; sandwiches, ice cream and drinks.
The Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) and the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) from Highlands and Okeechobee will attend in costume beginning with a flag salute at noon followed by musket firing.
At 1 p.m., local fire departments will participate in a Tug of War contest. Activities for kids include a sack race, egg relay and bounce house and tours of the furnished home.
For kids and adults, the Highlands County 4-H will host a Cake Baking Contest at the schoolhouse. The deadline for entering is September 23. No charge to enter. Folks can enjoy the grounds with ancient oak trees and plants and walk to the dock and view the famous Kissimmee River close-up when at one time, paddlewheel steamboats and ferries were a common site.
From Okeechobee take U.S 98 to Fort Basinger. Cross the Kissimmee River Bridge and turn left onto S.R. 721 to 70 Boondock Road a very short distance.
