OKEECHOBEE —  If you drove by Central Elementary School on Wednesday morning, you may have noticed an inordinate number of police cars there. They were participating in active shooter training organized by Sgt. Skip Eddings, who is the school resource officer for that school. Eddings was in charge of the training and planned the various scenarios to help the officers prepare for the possibility of an active shooter situation.

Jeremy La Rue, who is not only an officer but also owns a local business said:

As the owners of Total Roadside Services, LLC and Total Roadside Service Towing & Recovery, it was my great pleasure to be one of the top sponsors of the Okeechobee Police Department continuous education program. This program allowed the Okeechobee Police Department to purchase training equipment for the department. Me and my wife Tabitha La Rue would like to thank every person or business that spent money at Total Roadside Services. This allowed us to give back to our community today. Thank you Okeechobee.
As an active city police officer, I also had great pleasure training with that equipment at Central Elementary School today. This allowed the officers of the Okeechobee Police Deptartment to be prepared in case of an active shooter situation. A big shout out to Sergeant Skip Eddings who was in charge of this training and allowed us to run multiple scenarios to handle multiple situations to prepare and educate the officers. I would also like to thank Chief Donald Hagan and Lieutenant B. Reyna for allowing this well-needed training to take place.

In addition to the donation by Total Roadside, donations were made by Ash Ahmed from Okeechobee Motel and David McCormick from Tire Zone.

Not all recent donations were for training, but all were happily received. In May, Walmart made a donation of food for Law Enforcement Appreciation  Month. In addition, the owners of the Boost stores,  Valentin Bautista and Ceferino Espinoza donated to help with Honor Guard uniforms.

Lt. B. Reyna said, "All donations were much appreciated." About the active shooter training, he said he felt the active shooter training was much needed to help them be prepared, and he wants to continue the trainings a couple times each year. "As you well know, you can never be too prepared for an active shooter in our schools."
