Police detective retiring

OKEECHOBEE — After nearly 20 years of service to the city of Okeechobee, Detective James Pickering is retiring. Pickering began his career with the Okeechobee City Police Department in March of 2006. He became a member of the narcotics task force in 2008, was promoted to detective in 2013 and has set his retirement date for March 31. Police Chief Donald Hagan said, “He’s done a great job. I’m so proud to know James.”
Pickering worked under three different police chiefs, and plans to continue his work at the academy teaching rookies how to do their jobs well.
Pickering, who has a close relationship with Santa Claus said, “Santa Claus and I are tight. I have it on good authority he will be back.” Pictured with the detective are his wife and his mother.

Pickering was honored during the  Tuesday night city council meeting.
