Remembering Memorial Day

Reflections from the Pulpit

Posted

May 31 is Memorial Day, a day set aside to remember who died while serving in the military, but which in many families has been a day to remember all their loved ones. I grew up in Florida, far away from my family buried in Pennsylvania. Each year, relatives would visit the graves of loved ones and lay flowers on the graves, but this tradition was foreign to me. Until recent years, with the death of my parents, there were no graves to visit. Tomorrow, I don’t know if I will make the drive to visit my parents’ graves or stay home. They are not there, but it is still the place where their bodies lie. I miss them very much, especially on days like this.

Memorial Day began as a Southern tradition during the Civil War, but it quickly spread all across the nation in the years following the war. It remains an important day, especially to military families and can be an important day for all of us to remember and give thanks. Memorial Day has also become the unofficial start of summer. It is good to remember those who paid the ultimate price, it is also good to play and vacation in our lovely state and beyond. Being married to a teacher, I still keep up with the school year and with school being out, our summer routine starts in full swing. So, what will your Monday look like? I don’t know if I will drive up to Winter Park tomorrow or remember my family here at home, but remember

memorial day, reflections
