Semi driver killed in accident on Florida's Turnpike

OKEECHOBEE COUNTY – A 39-year-old Miami man died on the Florida Turnpike on Oct. 25, at 4:50 p.m., after the tractor-trailer he was driving struck the back of a tow truck, traveled off the road, struck several trees and went into a canal.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, a semi-tractor trailer was traveling south on State Road 91 (Florida`s Turnpike) in the area of the 183 mile marker, in the outside lane. A tow truck was traveling south on State Road 91 in the area of the 183 mile marker, in the outside lane in front of the semi. The tow truck was pulling onto the shoulder south on Florida's Turnpike for a disabled vehicle service call. The right front of the semi collided with the left rear of the tow truck. The semi traveled west into the tree line, struck multiple trees and came to rest in a canal with the tractor portion overturned, facing west. The tow truck overturned after the collision in a western direction and came to final rest on its wheels facing northwest. The driver of the semi succumbed to the injuries caused by the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene.

The tow truck driver, a 38-year-old Palm City man, was not injured, according to the FHP report.

The case is under investigation by FHP.
