Some county roads to be closed to truck traffic

OKEECHOBEE – Tractor-trailer and commercial vehicles that require the operator to have a valid Commercial Driver License will be restricted from some county roads under an ordinance to be considered at the April 13 meeting of the Okeechobee County Board of Commissioners.

According to the county staff report, due to the concern of large trucks utilizing various residential roadways throughout the county,
The county commission has been requested to designate various roadways and/or segments of roads to be utilized for local truck traffic only and to prohibit all thru truck use. These roadways are residential in nature and several families and children live in these areas.

If approved, these roadways will be identified as “No-Thru Truck Traffic” zones and would only permit local truck traffic only, which would include trucks that are necessary to make deliveries to, or from, properties either abutting, or only accessible from, these roads and/or road segments.

Streets already designated by ordinance for local traffic only include:

• SW Ninth Street From SW 67th Drive to SW 87th Terrace, designated by ordinance, Oct. 28, 2021;

• SW 16th Street (Old Dixie Highway) From SW 24th Avenue (Eagle Bay Drive) to SW 48th Avenue, Jan. 23, 2003;

• SW 24th Avenue (Eagle Bay Drive) From SW 32nd Street (Durrance Road) to State Road 70 (NE Park Street), Jan. 23, 2003;

• SW 16th Avenue (Ferrell Road) From SR 78 to SW 32nd Street (Durrance Road), Jan. 23, 2003.

• SW 32nd Street (Durrance Road) From US Highway 441 to SW 24th Avenue (Eagle Bay Drive), approved Jan. 23, 2003;

• SW 28th Street (Wolff Road) From US Highway 441 to SW 24th Drive (Eagle Bay Drive), Jan. 23, 2003;

• SW 48th Avenue From SW 16th Street (Old Dixie Highway) to State Road 70 (NE Park Street), Jan. 23, 2003;

• NE 13th Avenue From NE 12th Street/NE 13th Street to NE Fifth Street, designated, Aug. 26. 2004.

Streets under consideration to be added to the designation of “local truck traffic only” at the April 13 meeting include:

• NE 14th Avenue From NE 12th Street/NE 13th Street to NE Fifth Street;

• NE 14th Avenue From NE 5th Street to State Road 70 (NE Park Street);

• NE 15th Avenue From NE 12th Street/NE 13th Street to State Road 70 (NE Park Street);

• NE 16th Avenue From NE 12th Street/NE 13th Street to State Road 70 (NE Park Street);

• NE 17th Avenue From NE 5th Street to State Road 70 (NE Park Street);

• NE 18th Terrace From NE 4th Street to State Road 70 (NEPark Street);

• NE 8th Street From NE 28th Avenue (Ellerbee Road) to NE 32nd Avenue;

• NE 11th Lane From NE 28th Avenue (Ellerbee Road) to NE 32nd Avenue;

• SE 34th Avenue From SE 28th Street to US Highway 441;

• SE 38th Avenue From SE 32nd Lane to US Highway 441;

• SE 40th Avenue From SR 710 to SE 26th Street;

• SE 43rd Avenue From SE 26th Street to Se 28th Street;

• SE 25th Street From SE 34th Drive to SE 40th Avenue;
