OKEECHOBEE -- On Tuesday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. an educational, historical and social gathering of about 40 members of Highlands Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution, Okeechobee SAR and DAR, the Sebring Historical Society, Highlands Geneaological Society, The Florida Society of the War of 1812 and Heritage Association of Highlands County will be held at Edna Pearce Lockett Estate on U.S. 98 on the Kissimmee River at the Highlands/Okeechobee County line.
It is hosted by Highlands Chapter SAR, James Dean, president, and all are guests of Butch and Donna Thompson, owners of the Edna Pearce Lockett Estate.
The SAR and DAR invite anyone descended from ancestors who supported the American Revolution in any way to apply for membership.
This event was originally planned as part of a regional conference of Florida Society SAR and the Florida Society of the War of 1812 at Sebring Sevens Hotel, but that was cancelled due to omicron. The Estate has room for social distancing, so it is ideal for this historical meeting. These organizations will return to the Estate Again March 12 and 13 at the Second Annual Heritage Festival, which is open to the public.
Members will enjoy educational and historic lectures and tour the 1897 house, 1910 schoolhouse and enjoy an ecological boat tour on the Kissimmee River. Photos of members in Colonial dress will be taken in front of the 450 year old Live Oak Liberty Tree, dedicated by Highlands Chapter SAR on Patriot's Day 2020, at the 100th Anniversary of Highlands County. That tree was dedicated as a memorial of the original Liberty Tree in Boston cut down by the British in 1775, but was growing when that tree was planted.
If you are descended from ancestors who supported the Revolution, SAR and DAR welcome your application. Younger members are especially welcome. The organizations take part in Historic events such as this, and invite you to become involved and carry on the ideals of your ancestors.
