Teen accused of assault

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — After a teen reportedly showed up at the gym where his ex-girlfriend works and threatened her, he was charged with robbery by sudden snatching, criminal mischief, hindering the contact of law enforcement and assault.

Devon Taggart, 17, was arrested March 14 at approximately 1:45 p.m. after he allegedly went to the gym where the complainant works and reportedly grabbed her cell phone out of her hand, throwing it to the floor and smashing it.

Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Tullio responded to the gym on Southwest 32nd Street after the complainant called 911. The victime told him Taggart had Facetimed her earlier and during the call had pointed a gun at the phone and told her he was going to shoot up the home where the girl slept the night before. She said she believes she heard a gun shot.

Shortly afterward, Taggart reportedly walked into the gym, and the complainant ran into the bathroom to hide. Taggart reportedly began to pull on the bathroom door trying to open it and was able to wrench it open despite the lock. When he entered, she said he snatched her phone out of her hand and smashed it. He then began yelling at her. He left after a gym member threatened to call the sheriff’s office.

Deputy Jamie Knapp located Taggart at a home on Southwest 24th Avenue and arrested him. He was transferred to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
