Teen beats girl with broom

OKEECHOBEE — A 16-year-old boy was charged with aggravated battery after reportedly beating a teenage girl with a broom. At approximately 2 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, a neighbor said she heard people yelling from the house next door. The girl knocked on her door asking for help and said someone was trying to hit her with a broomstick. She called 911 for assistance.

Deputy Robert Broughton of the Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to Raulerson Hospital and, with permission of the victim’s mother, was able to speak with her. She reportedly told Broughton she and Salatiel Castaneda, 16, were lying down in the living room when he became angry and began to hit her with a broom stick. She ran out of the house and called her cousin to come help her. Her cousin picked her up and drove her to the hospital, where it was discovered she had injuries to her right shin, upper back and on the top of her head.

According to the arrest report, when Deputy Broughton entered the residence to speak with Casteneda, there was a glass device commonly used to smoke marijuana in plain view on the living room table. Laying beside it was a container containing less than one gram of marijuana resin. While escorting Casteneda to the patrol vehicle, he reportedly requested that Deputy Broughton give him the “bong” and marijuana. Deputy Broughton refused.

Casteneda was reportedly uncooperative and refused to enter the patrol vehicle. He was ordered to enter multiple times before finally complying.

Castaneda, Northwest 46th Avenue, was arrested and charged with aggravated battery with bodily harm, possession of marijuana resin and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was transferred to the custody of the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice.
