Teen killed when car hits tree

OKEECHOBEE  -- A 17-year-old Okeechobee girl died in an automotive accident on  Oct. 25, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

According to the FHP report, an 18-year-old girl was driving a sedan, with a 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl as passengers around 2:35 p.m.

The vehicle was traveling on State Road 78 W eastbound, just east of SW 99th Drive, when the driver lost control of the vehicle, the FHP report explains, The vehicle swerved towards the left and collided with a tree on the western shoulder.

After impact with the tree, one of the passengers succumbed to the injuries caused by the crash and was pronounced deceased on the scene.  The driver suffered serious injuries. The other passenger received minor injuries, according to the report. The report states the driver and the 16-year-old passenger were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash. The 17-year-old passenger was not wearing a seat belt, the report states.
