Teen shot at while driving through town

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — A local teen called 911 after he was  shot at while driving past Lunkers on March 25 shortly after 10 a.m. He said he followed the man who shot at him into the Walmart parking lot.

Okeechobee City Police officers responded to his call and found the vehicle he described in the parking lot. As they entered the lot, the vehicle drove out with police officers in pursuit. The chase continued out 70 West and on to U.S. 98 where an Okeechobee County sheriff’s deputy picked up the pursuit, traveling at speeds in excess of 100 mph. As he drove, the driver, later identified as Moses Munoz, 18, reportedly threw items out his vehicle’s window. Munoz ran out of gas in Highlands County, just north of Spring Lake. A search of his vehicle produced a black and silver Smith and Wesson 9mm.

Detective Dale LaFlam spoke to the complainant, and according to the report, the complainant told him he met Munoz at the lake to smoke some weed. When Munoz arrived, he pointed a gun in the complainant’s face and told him to give him all his weed and turn his car off. After the complainant gave him everything he had, Munoz got back in his car and left. After a few moments, the complainant turned his car back on and followed Munoz toward town. When Munoz saw him, he shot at him but missed. He shot at him a second time and hit his car.

Munoz was charged with shooting into a vehicle, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon without intent to kill, fleeing or eluding law enforcement at high speed, robbery by sudden snatching and shooting a firearm from a vehicle. His bond was set at $185,000.

The complainant was charged with possession of marijuana under 20 grams, a misdemeanor, and was released under his own recognizance.
