Teens charged with escape from Level 10 juvenile facility

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — Two teens were arrested Sunday after allegedly attempting to escape from the Everglades Youth academy. On March 7 at approximately 8:30 a.m., Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Horace Nicholson was dispatched to the Everglades Youth Facility (Level 10) in reference to an assault.

When Nicholson arrived, he spoke to the complainant, who works at the facility. The employee told him he had been assaulted by two teens. He explained he was sitting in a chair by the door when Anthony Stokes, 17, approached, snatched the chair out from under him and then began punching him repeatedly as he fell to the floor. A second teen, Xavier Simon, 16, ran over and began hitting the employee in the head with a video game controller. He said Stokes grabbed his keys, opened the door and both juveniles left the dorm.

The employee’s story was backed up by a video recording, and the arrest report notes Stokes and Simon can be seen on the video laughing and bragging to each other about the incident.

Both teens were charged with escape and battery on detention staff. In addition, Stokes was charged with robbery/sudden snatching for allegedly taking the keys. They were transferred to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.
