Thousands of Floridians hospitalized due to COVID-19

Okeechobee has lowest vaccination rate in area with only 44% of those over age 12 vaccinated

Across Florida, hospitals are struggling to treat thousands of people with COVID-19. “Even though COVID-19 hospitalizations have remained flat for roughly a week, they remain near record levels,” said Mary C. Mayhew, President and CEO, Florida Hospital Association. “We are not out of the woods just yet as our health care heroes continue to provide care to the patients in their extremely full hospitals and emergency departments.”

According to the Florida Hospital Association, 16,820 Floridians were hospitalized related to COVID-19 as of Aug. 24, 2021.

State wide, 36.2% of all hospital patients have confirmed COVID-19; 22.5% of patients in ICU have covid; and 17.1% of hospitalized patients are on ventilators.

The majority of Florida hospitals – 75.8% – have critical staffing shortages.

All over south Florida health officials are encouraging all eligible residents to be vaccinated against the covid virus. According to the Florida Department of Health, in the seven day period ending Aug. 19:

• 249,120 Collier County residents have been vaccinated – 71% of those over age 12.

• 5,679 Glades County residents have been vaccinated – 47% of those over age 12.

• 17,104 Hendry County residents have been vaccinated – 51% of those over age 12.

• 53,942 Highlands County resident have been vaccinated – 58% of those over age 12.

• 94,093 Martin County residents have been vaccinated – 64% of those over age 12.

• 16,062 Okeechobee County residents have been vaccinated – 44% of those over age 12.

• 904,893 Palm Beach County residents have been vaccinated – 70% of those over age 12.

The majority (90-95%) of those hospitalized related to COVID-19 are unvaccinated, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) data. While it is possible for a vaccinated person to contract the covid delta variant, most vaccinated people will have no symptoms or mild symptoms. According to the CDC, most of the breakthrough cases occurred in people over the age of 65. Some medications interfere with the effectiveness of the vaccines. (If you are concerned about the effectiveness of your vaccination, your doctor can order an antibody test to determine if the vaccine worked.)
