James Dean, president of the Highlands County SAR, told the campers about the Liberty Tree on the Edna Pearce Lockett Estate. He explained the tradition of the Liberty Tree dates back to the Revolutionary War. The original Liberty Tree in Boston was cut down by the British in 1775. That tree, an elm tree that stood near Sam Adam’s brewery on the road into Boston, had become a gathering point of the Sons of Liberty and all those who opposed English oppression. The massive live oak on the Edna Pearce Lockett Estate, which is more than 6 feet in diameter, was growing in 1775, when the original Liberty Tree was cut down. The tree was dedicated as a Liberty Tree as part of the Highlands County Centennial Celebration.

OKEECHOBEE -- This summer, the Okeechobee Extension Office hosted a special camp for youth ages 8-18. Trek Through Florida, Adventures in History Day Camp was held June 14-18 and June 28-July 2. Campers visited the Pearce Lockett Estate in Highlands County; the Palm Beach Zoo in West Palm Beach; Solomon’s Castle in Ona; the Navy Seal Museum and Pepper Park Beach in Fort Pierce; and the Kennedy Space Center in Melbourne
