HIGHLANDS COUNTY -- Two people were killed and two critically injured in a head-on crash on State Road 70 in Highlands County on Monday afternoon.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) report, the accident occurred at 2:10 p.m. on Nov. 15 on State Road 70, just east of County Road 72.
A sport utility vehicle, driven by a 65-year-old Melbourne woman was traveling east in SR 70.
A sedan, driven by a 72-year-old Rotunda West woman, was traveling west on SR 70.
According to the FHP report, the driver of the SUV attempted to pass slower moving eastbound traffic by entering the westbound lane. The front of the eastbound SUV collided with the front of the westbound sedan. The SUV came to rest on the northern grass shoulder of SR 70 and the sedan came to rest partially on the northern grass shoulder and partially in the westbound lane.
The driver of the SUV was critically injured. A passenger in the SUV -- 68-year-old Melbourne man died at the scene.
The driver of the sedan was critically injured. A passenger in the sedan -- a 68-year-old Rotunda West man -- died in the crash.
Both of the drivers and both of the passengers were wearing seat belts.
