UPDATE: Terrorist threat thwarted

OKEECHOBEE — A 16-year-old high school student was arrested Friday, Aug. 21, for a post made on social media. The post depicted a gun being held inside a classroom with a time stamp, indicating it was happening during the morning’s school hours. The teen, identified as Adrian Juan Reyes, was charged with making terroristic threats, a third degree felony. He was immediately taken into custody.

Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Donnie Holmes was contacted by a concerned parent on Friday morning after the parent saw the picture on Snapchat. It was later determined the picture was Photoshopped, and the gun and the hand holding the gun had been Photoshopped into the picture.

The report notes the photo that was posted on Snapchat caused a mass hysteria amongst parents and students believing someone was on campus with a gun. Reyes was turned over to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice.

The teen was charged with making terroristic threats, a third degree felony. The subject was immediately taken into custody.

At no time were any students or school faculty in danger.

Sheriff Noel E. Stephen stated, “Great team work by all involved! That said folks, remember social media is not the best way to report these type of incidents! Call 911 as seconds matter!”
