Vehicle plunges into canal while evading police

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — A gray jeep crashed into a canal Saturday as the driver reportedly attempted to run from the law. On Feb. 13, Okeechobee City Police Sgt. Cesar Romero heard a call come out regarding a reckless driver on State Road 70 West nearing the city limits.

According to his report, Romero spotted the vehicle a few moments after hearing the call and attempted to stop it. Although he turned on his lights and siren, the vehicle failed to stop, continuing through town and making a left turn onto U.S. 441 North. Around the 1600 block of U.S. 441, the jeep made a U-turn and headed back towards the city limits. It made an abrupt right turn at Northwest 12th Street, made several turns and then crashed into a canal near the 1400 block of Northwest Seventh Avenue.

The driver, later identified as Dalance Jumper Carrillo, 19, ran away from the vehicle but was located by Officers Trenton Moutschka and Ramon Liberato approximately 350 feet from the vehicle.

The jeep belonged to Carrillo’s grandmother.

Carrillo was charged with driving without a license and fleeing/eluding law enforcement. He was issued a citation for having a taillight out and failing to obey traffic control. His bond was set at $5,500.
