Veterans work on the big guns: You can help

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — Local veterans, city employees and volunteers are busily working on refurbishing the big guns from Veterans’ Park. Veteran Marty Faulkner said they had no trouble moving the guns to the city barn and have begun work on them.

A committee was formed in August whose sole purpose is to oversee the Veterans’ Park improvements. Over the years, it has mainly been veterans who volunteer their time to do the upkeep and maintenance on Veterans’ Park explained Faulkner, although the city does help.

There will be a meeting Oct. 6 at 10 a.m. in the chambers of the Okeechobee City Council. The meeting room is located on the second floor of City Hall at 55 S.E. Third Avenue. “We are asking organizations like the VFW, Amvets, American Legion and individuals to please come and hear what’s going on; put in your .02. We will be talking about the things we are thinking of changing, the new design for the park,” said Faulkner. “Any input they have would be great. It would certainly put some insight into it.”

If you are interested in getting involved either with your time or your money, please contact the American Legion. You can donate funds through the Legion, the VFW posts, Amvet or the Okeechobee Sheriff’s Office. Just earmark your donation, “big guns.”
