OKEECHOBEE — After months and months of speculation, Okeechobee City Administrator Marcos Montes de Oca said WaWa has finally given him a timeline for construction and plans to have the doors open on the new WaWa in Okeechobee in July 2021. Speculations have abounded for the last year as the site was at first prepped but then seemingly abandoned. Some claimed the company discovered underground gas leaks which were too expensive to clean up. Others speculated that a lack of a turning lane was the problem.
When a new fence went up around the property this month, hopes were raised in the community that maybe construction would begin again, but they were quickly dashed when someone said it had only been fenced to prevent illegal dumping on the property.
However, after consulting further with the corporate office, the city administrator discovered his source had confused the Okeechobee location with a different store.
The Okeechobee store will be located on State Road 70 near Walgreens. Many worry about the traffic congestion it could cause, but judging by the comments posted online, the majority of WaWa fans look forward to the new store with happy anticipation.
