OKEECHOBEE — A local woman, arrested on drug charges, reportedly asked the arresting officer if it was illegal to snort her own medicines.

Tammy Eckenwiler, 49, was arrested Feb. 4 by Okeechobee City Police Officer Ramon Liberato and charged with two counts possession a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia.

On Thursday at approximately 4:45 p.m., Liberato witnessed a car speeding in the 300 block of Northeast Ninth Street. The car registered at a speed of 42mph in a 25mph zone. Liberato pulled the car over and made contact with Eckenwiler, who reportedly appeared nervous and was shaking. She told Liberato she was nervous because she rarely gets pulled over.

Liberato asked if he could search the vehicle and was given permission. Before she exited the car, Liberato noticed she was holding a $5 bill and said she seemed to be trying to conceal it. He asked if he could have it, and she handed it to him, reportedly telling him there were two pills rolled up inside it. When asked if she had a prescription for the pills, she reportedly told him she did. She then reportedly handed him a pill bottle containing several different types of pills, none of them matching the description on the label.

The report notes when asked if there were any syringes in the vehicle, she said no, but when he searched the vehicle, he found one in the driver’s side door panel. He also found used Brillo on the driver’s seat, a container with marijuana flakes and a blue straw containing powder residue. When asked about the syringe, she reportedly told him it belonged to her son, who uses heroin.

When she saw the straw, she reportedly told Liberato she uses it to snort her pills. “That isn’t illegal to snort my medication is it?” she reportedly asked him.

Her bond was set at $5,000.
