Woman charged with child abuse and battery

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — After reportedly hitting someone else’s child in the head, a woman was charged with battery and with child abuse.

On March 1 at about 8 p.m., Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Michael Cauley was on a traffic stop in the 500 block of Northeast 15th Avenue when he heard yelling coming from a nearby residence. He heard a woman’s voice yell, “Don’t put your hands on me. Keep your hands off me.” When he looked over, he saw several people standing in the road. After his traffic stop, he drove to the home to see what was going on and saw two women fighting in the middle of the street. When he drove up, one of the women, later identified as Meshele Vasquez, 24, ran into the house. Cauley heard a side door open and saw Vasquez run out of the house and into the woods. He chased her and was able to catch her after she tripped and fell.

After he had her restrained, he returned to the residence and spoke with a juvenile, who told him Vasquez started an altercation with her and hit her in the head. Cauley notes there was an egg shaped knot on the girl’s forehead near her eye.

In addition to the battery and child abuse charges, Vasquez was also charged with resisting arrest without violence. Her bond was set at $6,000.
