Woman reportedly involved in second DUI related accident

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — A local woman was reportedly involved in her second DUI related accident within the last five years this week. Debra Brown, 66, Northwest 21st Avenue, was arrested Feb. 21 by OCSO and charged with DUI.

On Saturday at approximately 9:45 p.m., Okeechobee County Sheriff’s Deputy Robert Murtagh was patrolling near the intersection of Southwest 16th Street and Southwest 32nd Avenue when a report came from dispatch about a one-vehicle accident in that area. According to his report, he approached the vehicle and found Brown seated in the driver’s seat with her seatbelt on. The vehicle was running, keys in the ignition, lights on and had been driven off the roadway. The vehicle was sitting on a precariously steep incline facing downward. Brown’s breath test results approximately an hour after the accident were reported as 0.157 and 0.140. Her bond was set at $750.

In March 2016, Brown was charged with DUI, failure to drive within a single lane and leaving the scene of an accident involving damage to property. In that incident, she hit a concrete telephone pole as she was leaving the Brahma Bull Restaurant at approximately 4 a.m. A witness saw her hit the pole and then drive toward town. Deputy Marcus Collier spotted her vehicle heading westbound in the eastbound lane. Brown was heading directly at him and ran him completely off the road, despite his activated emergency lights. The deputy was able to turn around and follow the vehicle for almost a mile before she finally pulled over and stopped. When he approached the vehicle, he realized Brown was completely nude and had an open can of Bud Light in the console. A second deputy arrived and provided a raincoat for her to cover up with. When asked how much she had to drink, she replied, “Too much.” Her breathalyzer test results were 0.162 and 0.156. After entering a plea of no contest, she was sentenced to one year of probation.

In 2014, Brown was charged with disorderly intoxication and after pleading no contest, adjudication was withheld. She was placed on probation for six months.
