OKEECHOBEE – An 18-year-old Okeechobee man was killed in a traffic crash at 6:20 a.m. on Dec. 9, on U.S. 441 North at County Road 68 (Northwest 160th Street), according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol report, vehicle-1 (a sedan driven by an 18 year old from Okeechobee) was traveling eastbound on CR-68 approaching a stop sign at the intersection of US-441. Vehicle-2 (a tractor-trailer driven by a 58-year-old St. Cloud man) was traveling southbound on US-441. Vehicle-3 (a pickup truck driven by a 55-year-old Okeechobee man) was traveling northbound on US-441.
The sedan driver failed to yield right-of-way to the tractor-trailer, and attempted a left turn northbound onto U.S. 441, the report states. The right front of the tractor-trailer collided with the left side of the sedan. After impact, both vehicles were redirected in a southeasterly direction.
The sedan came to final rest in the east grass shoulder. The tractor-trailer overturned and came to final rest on its right side, blocking both northbound and southbound lanes on US-441.
The driver of northbound pickup truck was unable to stop in time to avoid a collision with tractor-trailer and its front collided with the overturned trailer.
The 18-year-old driver of the sedan succumbed to the injuries caused by the crash and was pronounced deceased on scene. The tractor-trailer driver received minor injuries. The pickup truck driver was seriously injured, according to the FHP report.
The accident is still under investigation. FHP Trooper Gentry is the crash investigator. FHP Cpl. Deravil is the homicide investigator.
