Aubrie Libroth takes over as coach of Okeechobee Shockwaves

OKEECHOBEE-  The Okeechobee Shockwaves are hitting the water again in 2021 and they have a new head coach leading the way.

Aubrie Libroth took over the team following Jack Boon’s retirement this year. Aubrie swam for the both Okeechobee High School and the Shockwaves in school and also spent time on the Indian River State College Aquatics team.

She was an assistant coach under Boon for the Shockwaves and helped guide the team to their first trophy in a regional tournament in 11 years back in 2018. That year coach Boon had to take time away from the team for training as a school resource officer. Aubrie played a crucial role in keeping the team together during that time, making sure the workouts for the swimmers were well balanced and preparing the team to compete in their meets.

“I am excited to start this new chapter as the head coach and I believe it will be a pretty easy transition,” said Libroth after taking over the program. “I am sure that there is still much to learn and I am excited for the opportunity to do so.”

“The sign-ups went well,” continued Aubrie. “We had a good turn out with swimmers excited to get back in the water. My goal for this year is to get the swimmers safely back into the water. With COVID, a few things have changed and safety is our number one priority. I hope to first keep everyone safe and secondly, to grow their love for swimming. I want the swimmers to have fun, learn more about the sport, and improve upon their skills.”

Those wishing to join the team still have time. Anyone from the ages of 5-18 can sign-up at one of the team’s practices. Practices for the Shockwaves are held every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Okeechobee County Sports Complex. Costs for the season are $60 per swimmer.
