Band Director receives honor

Goindoo named Yamaha’s Top “40 Under 40” Outstanding Music Educators

PALM BEACH COUNTY — For the second year in a row, Yamaha launched the top "40 Under 40" music education advocacy program to celebrate and recognize outstanding music educators who are making a difference by growing and strengthening their music programs.

Alain Goindoo, the Executive Director of the Hope Symphony, Inc., is among a select group of music educators chosen out of hundreds of nominations from students, parents, other teachers and administrators, local instrument dealers, and mentors, for  Yamaha's "40 under 40" list. One nomination letter described Goindoo as a nurturer who is credited with putting children on a positive, completely alternate trajectory, thanks to music.

Goindoo taught band in the Glades Area of Palm Beach County for 14 years. Goindoo, better known to the students as Mr. G said, “Pahokee built me. I was blessed to have the privilege to teach in Pahokee and I am who I am today because of the Glades and my students.”

Goindoo serves as the Executive Director of Hope Symphony Inc., which provides access to music, tools, and resources to children and families from the Glades and Palm Beach County. The Hope Symphony Summer Band Camp at Palm Beach Atlantic University was established in 2017 and serves approximately 100 Title I students.

Students at the camp receive music lessons from qualified instructors, free food, method books, and equipment. They engage in successful learning on a college campus with their peers, and the camp experience plants the idea in the students’ minds that the pursuit of higher education is a reality and something they can achieve.

“I wanted to bring hope for the future and level the playing field,” Goindoo said. “The Hope Symphony brings together a village of difference-makers who provide essential resources, equipment, personnel, camps, and life-changing opportunities that would otherwise pass by these children due to lack of access. The purpose of the camp is to promote more than music proficiency — the camp generates excitement for learning and gives hope for their future one note at a time.”

Goindoo has raised more than $380,000 in grants to support music education. He works diligently outside of school hours to write grants, raise awareness, and build community relationships with parents, local universities, city and county officials, as well as nonprofit organizations to meet the needs of children.

Goindoo, a graduate from the Alexander W. Dreyfoos Jr. School of the Arts in West Palm Beach is also the recipient of The Palm Beach Symphony Teacher of the Year Award in 2018 as well as the Florida State University Young Alumni Award in 2018, both prestigious awards for his community efforts and impact in the community.

His hard work and dedication helps create a safe space for students to learn and grow. It also sets an example, giving his students valuable lessons that they will carry with them for years to come.
