BELLE GLADE -- Belle Glade City Clerk Debra Buff was honored at the Aug. 16 meeting of the Belle Glade City Commission.

Stacey Johnson, clerk city of Holmes Beach and president Florida Association of City Clerks, said she came to the meeting to “honor your City Clerk Debra Buff, who is an amazing representation of our FACC profession.”

Buff served at the FACC president from June 2020 to June 2021.

“We were encouraged to avoid the ‘me’ and to become ‘we’ as FACC together and therefore we did have no limits to our successes and she guided us in that,” said Johnson.

“She did an amazing job during a very difficult time,” said Johnson. “Covid did not slow her down. She charged straight ahead and continually keep our association on track.” She said Buff helped the association make changes and set new goals and inspired members to step up to responsibilities and take on new challenges.

“Representing your city, she was chosen as a Homerule Hero,” said Johnson.

“This was an amazing journey,” said Buff. “I encourage all of our members to step up within our organization and give back.”

Johnson also presented a plaque to the city, thanking them for sharing their clerk with the FACC.

In other business, the commission approved an amendment to the employment agreement with City Manager Robert Rease.

The commission also heard a report from Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office. PBSO hosted family movie night the past three Thursdays. A lot of different organizations contributed to the event. Belle Glade City Parks & Recreation provided use of the parks. City staff was there afterwards and cleaned up the park. Community events keep youth occupied and out of harm’s way, said the PBSO representative.

“Community policing has been happening for years,” said Mayor Steve Wilson. He thanked PBSO for their contributions to the community.

In other business, the mayor said the civic center has been closed. “There’s a cry from those guys who were lifting weights.” He said they are not letting the public inside the civic center. “Since they can’t go on the side, you do it on the outside?” he asked.

A representative from Parks & Recreation said he would follow up on that.

In closing comments, Commissioner Joaquin Almazan also thanked PBSO. “It’s very important that we keep our kids involved and entertained, especially with their family. You’re building a good foundation for that,” he said.

The commissioners also encouraged residents to be vaccinated.

“We’ve got to get folks to get this vaccine,” said the mayor. “We are losing people in this small community by the numbers. People are dying because they don’t want to get the vaccine, and not wearing the mask. The mask is not the answer, but it’s a prevention. It helps. If you see someone walking around without it, if you see people who are a little hestiant about getting the vaccine, please encourage them to do so. Their lives depend on it and so do ours.

“I was at the ER yesterday. I saw seven families come up there related to covid,” the mayor said.

“If you haven’t gotten vaccinated, please think about it. You can save lives if you get vaccinated,” said Almazan, “Right now the hospitals are full, state and county.”
