Bicycle Bob supports Ride to Work program

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — Bicycle Bob stopped by the Okeechobee County Sheriff's Office recently with some donations for the "Ride to Work" program. "Mr. Bob" strongly supports this program and runs a bicycle repair company in Okeechobee.

This program was started one day when one of the deputies spotted a young man walking in a BK uniform to work. When he stopped and asked if he needed a ride, the conversation turned to the young man walking everywhere because he couldn't afford a vehicle but lived six miles from his work.

The deputy went to the evidence custodian and found a bike that had been abandoned and cleared through the "hold" process. He found the young man the next day and gave him the bike.

This positive interaction inspired Sheriff Noel E. Stephen and his staff to develop a program where they can offer a bike when they see someone walking under similar circumstances.

Sheriff Stephen once said, "If we can all come together and support just one person in this community at a time, we can make a difference."

If you have a lightly used or new bicycle collecting dust and want to donate it for a great cause, please contact us at 863.763.3117 Ext 5018, again "lightly used or new."
