The Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk on the north side of Route 41 West of State Road 29 has reopened to the public. The boardwalk had been closed since late March.

The 2,300-foot, wooden boardwalk takes visitors into the heart of Fakahatchee Strand, the largest bald cypress/royal palm swamp in the world. The bald cypress trees surrounding the boardwalk are hundreds of years old. A pond at the end of the boardwalk is great place to rest and observe alligators and a variety of birds who make the pond their home.

“With temperatures dropping and many migrating birds returning, the reopening of the boardwalk couldn’t come at a better time,” said Francine Stevens, executive director of the Friends of Fakahatchee.

The boardwalk is maintained by Friends of Fakahatchee volunteers with supplies funded by visitor donations.
