Okeechobee High School senior Joy Whipple is this week’s Big Lake Athlete of the Week for her performance in the Lady Brahman volleyball squad’s 4-0 start.
The Lady Brahmans have opened their 2021 season with four back-to-back wins, including a thrilling 3-2 win over Sebring on Aug. 31.
Joy earned a spot on the Lady Brahman varsity squad as a freshman, and has consistently led the team in kills every season. As a freshman she finished fourth overall in scoring in Okeechobee’s district.
Now, as a senior with three years of varsity volleyball experience, Whipple is a veteran presence and team leader for the Lady Brahmans on and off the court.
In Okeechobee’s 3-1 win over Sebastian River Whipple had 12 kills. In their 3-0 victory over Centennial she had 10 kills.
During the Lady Brahman’s dramatic win against Sebring Whipple had 19 kills. Okeechobee opened that game with a 25-14 win in the first set, but Sebring bounced back and won the next two sets back-to-back.
In the fourth set, Okeechobee had inched out to narrow 22-21 lead with it appeared that momentum was tilting Sebring’s way. But Whipple killed all of Sebring’s momentum with a well-timed, dominating spike that brought her teammates on the sideline to their feet. It seems when Okeechobee really needs a play, Joy has been able to rise to the occasion.
