Brahmans dominate Sharks in lopsided victory

Posted

OKEECHOBEE — The Okeechobee High School Brahman basketball team made quick work of the Sebastian River Sharks on Jan. 8, beating them 73-26.

After only the first quarter the Brahmans led by 22-2. Throughout much of the first half Sebastian River’s offense wasn’t able to successfully advance the ball down court before turning it over, much less get a shot off. The few shots that were put up by the Sharks more often than not missed.

Overall it was just a dominating performance by the Brahman defense. Words like “suffocating”, “aggressive”, and “tenacious” come to mind when watching the defensive performance by Okeechobee.

One sequence in the third quarter saw the Brahmans force three back-to-back turnovers, which all turned into points, in a matter of 15 seconds.

OHS sophomore Lee Edouard led the Brahmans with 20 points against the Sharks, followed by senior Kehjayah Rogers with 18.

The victory over the Sharks came on the heels of another win for the Brahmans. Okeechobee beat Port St. Lucie 72-50 on Jan. 7.

Rogers had another stand-out performance against PSL, scoring a team leading 28 points. OHS senior Rowan Hanely had 17 points in the game while junior Jayquavious Thomas had 10.

The back-to-back wins have improved Okeechobee’s record to 5-2 and put them in first in their 5A district 13. The Brahmans are trying to pull off a three-peat as district champions this year. Last season they finished with a 24-2 record and advanced to the regional final.

Next they’ll be on the road for a rematch against the Moore Haven Terriers on Jan. 14. Okeechobee won the first match-up against the Terriers, 60-45, on the back of a 22-9 run in the third quarter.

The Brahmans will be back in Okeechobee on Jan. 19 when they host the 8-5 John Carroll Catholic Rams. It’ll be one of only three remaining home games the Brahmans have remaining on their schedule.

Okeechobee makes the trip south of the lake to take on the Moore Haven Terriers at 7 p.m. on Jan. 14.
