Chamber collecting ‘Socks 4 Seniors’

Posted

OKEECHOBEE – The Chamber of Commerce of Okeechobee County is asking the community to step up this holiday season and brighten the lives of senior citizens with donations of warm, comfortable, colorful socks.

“This will be our second year that the Chamber of Commerce will be sponsoring our, Socks 4 Seniors, and once again we need everyone to help make this event one that will put smiles on the faces and warm the hearts and toes of many of our seniors,” said Paulette Wise, executive director.

“Most facilities have been in a locked down or semi locked down position for months now and we want to continue helping senior citizens living in nursing homes to bring some holiday cheer and cover the feet of many of our elderly seniors,” she continued. “This has certainly been an unusual and disturbing year for most everyone.”

The chamber is asking for new, non-skid backed socks. Bright colors, funny patterns and Christmas designs were well received last year. The non-skid backings are important because many of the recipients may be unsteady on their feet.

Socks can be any length.

A 91-year-old nursing home resident who was part of the program last year explained, “We’re just old, not dead and we still have a sense of humor!”

Socks can be dropped off at the chamber office, at the intersection of U.S. 441 and State Road 70 or at the Lake Okeechobee News, 107 S.W. 17th Street.

This year the chamber will not be allowed to package them as holiday gifts as they did last year, due to concerns about the spread of germs. “We will take them to our senior facilities as they will have a process to sanitize them prior to handing them out to their residents,” Wise explained.

The deadline to drop off socks will be Tuesday, Dec. 15, to allow time to distribute the socks.

“Remember, the holidays are supposed to be a fun time and the friendliest and most giving time of the year. But, for some it can also be lonely and depressing and many times our seniors can get lost in the hustle and bustle. With all that has happened this year, let’s get busy, put our best foot forward and I can’t wait to see how our community gives to those that are worth more than just a pair of socks,” Wise said.
