CLEWISTON — The Sunshine State Scholars program, designed in 1997, recognizes students, teachers and schools who have achieved excellence. Each Florida school district selects their top 11th grade student in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). This year’s program will bring 103 high school STEM scholars together to conduct a “think tank” on tough Florida challenges on April 8-9, in Orlando.

Clewiston High School (CHS) junior, Ryan Potter, has been named the Sunshine State Scholar nominee from Hendry County Schools. Potter is a member of CHS’ Collegiate Academy, and has earned straight As during his first semester as a full-time college student. He has also earned the title of Florida Academic Scholar, which is the highest level of the Bright Futures scholarship.

As the Sunshine State Scholar nominee from Hendry County Schools, Potter will join a group of 103 chosen scholars in Orlando for the special two-day “think tank” program that aims to create a networking opportunity for the students with employers that specialize in the STEM fields. The commissioner of education, the chancellor of k-12 public schools, and the chancellor of innovation will honor each scholar for their accomplishments during the program.

The Sunshine State Scholars program is a collaboration among the Florida Department of Education, the Florida Education Foundation, the Florida College System, the State University System of Florida and the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida. Representatives from Florida’s colleges and universities will be in attendance to discuss the higher education opportunities available to each scholar. Workshops for college applications and informational sessions on college funding will be held for the students and their parents, as well.
