Clewiston Police Department receives AEDs and trauma kits

Posted

CLEWISTON — According to the American Heart Associatino, survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest increase dramatically when the first defibrillation shock from an AED is applied prior to the arrival of EMS. The Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 is the first FDA-approved AED to combine fully-automatic shock delivery, dual-language functionality, variable escalating energy, and fast shock times to help save a victim‘s life.

As a small rural police department with a limited budget, the Clewiston Police Department has never before deployed AEDs into its patrol vehicles for use in the public while responding to calls-for-service. The Police and Kids Foundation, a Florida based 501 (c)(3), purchased six Cardiac Science Powerheart G5 AEDs for the department. Four of the these AEDs will be assigned to patrol to assure a 24/7 deployment in the community. In addition, one AED will be wall-mounted in the police department and one AED will be wall-mounted in the city animal shelter.

Chief Tom Lewis stated, “It’s well known that whenever a patient or a victim suffers cardiac arrest, early CPR and early defibrillation are the keys to survival. The generosity of the Police and Kids Foundation, Inc. has dramatically increased our ability to provide life-saving services to the citizens of Clewiston. We couldn’t be more grateful.”

In addition to the AEDs, the Police and Kids Foundation purchased a Zoll Comprehensive Trauma Kit, which includes an extensive set of medical supplies to help manage life-threatening issues such as severe bleeding, seizures, choking, hypothermia, broken bones, allergic reactions, and more. The integrated mobilize application and touch screen computer guides police officers to provide the best care. This will not only add to our live-saving capabilities, but it will be used in any active shooter or active assailant situation to better serve those with life threatening injuries. This comprehensive trauma kit also came with six portable medical trauma kits that will be deployed with our patrol officers.

Tracey Schofield, President of the Police and Kids Foundation, stated, “The mission of the Police and Kids Foundation to serve law enforcement and children has been well accomplished by this partnership. We wish the Clewiston Police Department, its citizens and their children the best.”

The Police and Kids Foundation, Inc. is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charity that was established in 2011 with the goal of supporting law enforcement agencies and children across the State of Florida. If you are interested in supporting the Police and Kids Foundation, you can go to your local tag office and order your “Fallen Law Enforcement Officer” specialty plate or visit their website for other ways to donate. Some of the proceeds from the sale of the plate go to the Police and Kids Foundation to allow them to support the families of fallen first responders, and for specialized training or needed equipment used to protect our officers while they do their jobs.

The $11,000.00 donation was dedicated by the Police and Kids Foundation President, Tracey Schofield, through presentation to the City of Clewiston Commission during their regularly scheduled Commission meeting on September 19, 2022.
