WEST PALM BEACH — Collier County joined the active members of the County Coalition for Responsible Management of Lake Okeechobee, St. Lucie and the Caloosahatchee Estuaries and the Lake Worth Lagoon — which has been renamed as just the “County Coalition” — at their Oct. 30 meeting in West Palm Beach.
“We have some serious water quality projects going on and challenges,” said Collier County Commissioner Penny Taylor. She said Collier County has not had the heavy rainfall experienced on the east coast this year and “that has helped with the algae blooms.”
She said Collier County is working on water quality projects, replacing stormwater management and outfall systems and removing septic tanks with septic-to-sewer conversion projects.
“There’s one main canal system called the Golden Gate Canal that made it possible for the development of the eastern part of Collier County,” she said. It flows directly into Naples Bay.
While it was great project when it was built, it is a source of problems today, she said.
